Diagnostic Reference Levels : the Swiss situation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The aim of this work is to describe how diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are being established and implemented in Switzerland. Several nationwide surveys are launched in order to determine the patient dose distributions for a number of CT and fluoroscopy examinations that will be used to set up the corresponding DRLs. Meanwile the european recommended DRLs are considered. When no European recommended DRLs are available, values based on average doses for 257 types of radiological examinations established during the 1998 nation-wide survey on the exposure of the Swiss population by diagnostic and interventional radiology are suggested for temporary use. These average doses were calculated using an appropriate dosimetric model for each radiological modality. For each type of examination a standard technique is defined and the dose is established based on the standard procedure and technical parameters. The DRLs are derived from the average doses using an appropriate multiplying factor to give a result comparable with that obtained with the 3rd-quartile method commonly used at the international level.

The need for national diagnostic reference levels: Entrance surface dose measurement in intraoral radiography
Background: Intraoral radiographies are the most frequent X-ray examinations in humans. According to International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommendations, the selection of a diagnostic reference level (DRL) should be specific to a country or region. Critica l organs such as thyroid gland are exposed to X-rays in intraoral radiography and these exposures should be kept as low ...
متن کاملLocal Diagnostic Reference Levels for Common Pediatric X-Ray Examinations in Khorasan Razavi Province, Iran
Introduction Given the fact that children are more sensitive to radiation, compared to adults, special attention needs to be paid to radiation protection in pediatric radiology. Diagnostic reference level (DRL) has been defined to be employed as a practical tool for examining the overall performance of a radiological center in terms of patient dose among a series of similar equipments in an are...
متن کاملDose Assessment in Computed Tomography Examination and Establishment of Local Diagnostic Reference Levels in Mazandaran, Iran
Background: Medical X-rays are the largest man-made source of public exposure to ionizing radiation. While the benefits of Computed Tomography (CT) are well known in accurate diagnosis, those benefits are not risk-free. CT is a device with higher patient dose in comparison with other conventional radiation procedures. Objective: This study is aimed at evaluating radiation dose to patients from ...
متن کاملPaediatric Dose AssessmentToward Establishment of National Diagnostic Reference Levels for Digital Radiography Examinations in Iran
Introduction: Paediatric patients deserve special attention because of the higher radiation risks compared with adults. The main purpose of this study is to determine patient dose and diagnostic reference level for Paediatric through Entrance Surface Dose (ESD) calculations in common X-ray examination and to establish Paediatric national DRLs in digital radiography in Iran. <...
متن کاملDiagnostic Reference Levels for Computed Tomography Examinations in Iran: A Nationwide Radiation Dose Survey
Introduction: International Commission on Radiological Protection introduced three basic principles of radiation protection, namely justification, optimization, and dose limit. Medical exposure has no dose limits, and generally, diagnostic reference levels are used as a tool for optimization of patient protection. Material and Methods: Dosimetry was performed on 20 CT scanners located in 14 cit...
